Willamina, The AIDS pig
This pig is a labor of love created by the children of Rise n' Shine, a local support group for children affected by AIDS. This pig displays the creativity of children, under the guidance of artist, Steve Jensen. Children were asked to bring toys; these toys were affixed on the pig to create the symbol for AIDS, a red ribbon. This project gave the Rise n' Shine children an opportunity to express themselves in a way that is positive and therapeutic.
Steve Jensen and the youth from Rise n' Shine
A noted sculpture and artist, Steve Jensen has worked with a number of youth organizations over the past year. An artist that has had a number of exhibition devoted to his work, Steve's work as a carver often leads him to create in the native traditions. "Carving is a universal cultural dialogue," says Steve. "Through this primitive form a number of images and practices can be explored." All of the wood used in Steve's work is naturally felled. His body of work typically honors natural resources and the relationships we maintain with them.
